Amid the process of finalizing the players’ rules and retention scheme for IPL 2025, a big news has come out about Dhoni. It is believed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may put Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the category of uncapped players while announcing the players’ rules before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The Times of India has given this information.
Actually, between 2008 and 2021, there was a rule in IPL that a cricketer who had retired 5 years ago could be put in the IPL auction along with an uncapped player. This issue was also raised in the meeting held between IPL team owners and IPL administration on 31st of last month. In this meeting, it was suggested to bring back the old rule of retirement, which was opposed by many franchise owners. But the news that has come now can give relief to the CSK management.
CSK CEO gave a big update
If BCCI applies the old rule, retaining Dhoni will be a cheap deal for CSK. As per the previous retention rules, an uncapped player could be retained for Rs 4 crore. CSK spent Rs 12 crore to retain Dhoni in the mega auction held ahead of IPL 2022. When asked if Dhoni will be counted as an uncapped player in the 2025 IPL auction, CSK CEO Kashi Vishwanathan told TOI that he has no information about it. He has not made any request for it. BCCI has told him that the ‘uncapped player rule’ can be kept, that’s all.
It is not yet clear whether Dhoni will play the next season i.e. IPL 2025 or not. However, a few days ago, Dhoni had made a big statement about playing in the next season of IPL in a promotional program. He had said that there is still a lot of time for IPL 2025 and he will have to see what decision BCCI takes regarding retaining the players.
