Sivasagar (Assam). Since the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the country, the biggest discussion has been about Assam. Now the Chief Minister of Assam has told how many applications have been received under CAA till now. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that so far only one application for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been received in the state.
Without giving any further information, he said that only one application has been made in Barak Valley. CM said, ‘The anti-CAA movement is based on lies and they (those at the forefront of spreading lies) will now have to answer. Several days have passed and only one application has been made so far in the state.
People spreading misconceptions on law
The Chief Minister said that misunderstandings were being spread among the people regarding the Citizenship Act and the demonstration was also being done in the same spirit. Many days have passed since this law was implemented and till now only one person has applied in the state. Those who opposed the law got their own answer. People used to say that after this people asking for citizenship will come in trucks. The reality is that till now only one person has applied in the state.
The Chief Minister told reporters after an election rally in Sonari in Sivasagar district under Jorhat Lok Sabha seat that some people are doing politics on emotional basis and provoking others. He said, there are many Bengali speaking communities in Sonari constituency also, but no one has applied for citizenship under CAA.
237 petitions have been filed against CAA
It is noteworthy that ever since this law came into force, there has been opposition to it. Till now, 237 petitions have been filed against it in the Supreme Court, on which hearing is to be held on Tuesday i.e. 9th April. The petitioners had challenged the constitutionality of CAA. The case is being heard by a 3-member bench of the apex court.
