London: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can appeal an order to extradite him to the US on espionage charges, a British court ruled on Monday. Two High Court judges said Assange had grounds to challenge the UK government’s extradition order. After this decision of the High Court, the way has been cleared for Assange to appeal, due to which this legal battle can drag on for years.
Assange faces 17 charges of espionage and one count of computer misuse over the publication of US documents on his website nearly 15 years ago. Assange has spent the last five years in a British prison after seeking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for seven years.
There is an allegation of espionage against America
Julian Assange is accused of spying for America. Assange has been fighting a legal battle for 13 years. An application was also filed by America in the British court for his extradition. America has assured the British court that they will not give death sentence to 52-year-old Julian Assange. Apart from this, if Assange is prosecuted on espionage charges, he will be given the right to free speech under the ‘US First Amendment Right’. It was the year 2010-11, when after the revelations of WikiLeaks, America had alleged that Julian Assange had spied on their country. He published the secret file, which put the lives of many people in danger, but Assange has always denied allegations of espionage.
Were arrested in 2010
Julian Assange was arrested in London in 2010 on appeal to Sweden. He was accused of rape by two Swedish women. To avoid deportation to Sweden, Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in 2012, thereby avoiding arrest. He stayed here in Ecuador between 2012 and 2019. On April 11, 2019, he failed to appear in the court, after which he was arrested. The Ecuadorian government later refused to grant him asylum. The reason for this was said to be continuous violation of international agreements. In 2019, he was arrested by British police after coming out of the Ecuadorian embassy. Since then he is lodged in Belmarsh Jail, London. Although Sweden withdrew rape charges against Assange in November 2019, he remained in jail. (AP)
