New Delhi: The Russian embassy has expressed condolences over the “unfortunate events” of Indian casualties during Moscow’s “special military operation” in Ukraine. The Russian embassy said the recruitment of Indians in its armed forces has been stopped since April. In a statement, the embassy said Moscow and New Delhi are working in close coordination for the prompt “identification and release from service” of Indian citizens who voluntarily joined the military service for contractual work and now wish to return home. It said since April this year, Russia’s Defence Ministry has stopped recruiting citizens of a number of other countries, including India, into military service.
Foreign Minister gave information in Lok Sabha
India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar gave full information about this in the Lok Sabha on Friday (09-08-2024) this week. Jaishankar had said that the government is waiting for 69 Indian citizens recruited in the Russian army to exit the service and in many cases there are indications that Indian citizens were misled. He had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised this matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin. While answering supplementary questions in the House, he also said that the government has taken seriously the issues of recruitment of Indian citizens in the Russian army and cyber crime smuggling of citizens in Southeast Asian countries.
So many Indians had joined the Russian army
Jaishankar had told the Lok Sabha that a total of 91 Indian citizens have been reported to have been recruited in the Russian Army, of which eight have died, 14 have been discharged or repatriated and 69 citizens are awaiting their release from the Russian Army.

The Foreign Minister had told the House that Prime Minister Modi had also raised this issue during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last month. The minister had also said that the problem is that Russian officials say that these Indian citizens have signed contracts to serve with the Russian army. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that Prime Minister Modi has received assurances from President Putin that any Indian citizen who is in the service of the Russian army will be removed from service and expelled.
