New Delhi . The 40 -year -old technical professionals from Kolkata, who have been living in Florida, USA for nearly a decade, were killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday. Terrorists fired indiscriminately on people in the beautiful Basaron Valley, most of whom were tourists. At least 26 people died in the attack. Bitan came to his hometown Kolkata on 8 April with his wife Sohini (37) and a three -year -old son Hirdan. Later, all three of them moved to Kashmir to celebrate holidays. He was to return on Thursday (April 24).
Bitan’s wife and child survived the attack and are currently safe.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote in a post on X: “Today is my condolences to the families of the victims of the disastrous terrorist attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir. One of the victims, Bitan officer, is from West Bengal. I spoke to his wife on the phone. In this hour of grief, no word is enough to comfort them. I am taking all the steps for all the families who lose my loved ones in this inhuman terrorist attack. “
Bitan’s father told Anandbazar magazine, “He wanted to take all of us along. But I asked him to go with my wife. I talked to him in the afternoon. What happened after that …”
Bitan’s brother said, “I spoke to my younger brother in the morning. He said that after returning from Kashmir, we would plan a long journey. We did not know that this would be our last conversation.”
Pahalgam terror attack was strongly condemned across the country and world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Saudi Arabia, left his journey in the middle and immediately returned.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Srinagar on Monday night and held a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Security forces are currently conducting intensive search operations in the area.
