The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata and deteriorating law and order situation. Addressing a press conference at the state BJP office here, the party’s national spokesperson Shazia Ilmi said the competent authorities should consider imposing President’s rule in West Bengal. “The safety of women is in danger and the law and order situation has deteriorated in West Bengal,” she said.

On the doctors’ demand for implementation of the Central Security Act for Doctors, Ilmi said if there is such a bill, it should become a law.

The Prevention of Violence against Health Professionals and Establishments Bill, 2022, also known as the Central Security Act for Doctors, was introduced in the lower house of Parliament in 2022. Resident doctors have started an indefinite strike to express solidarity with the nationwide movement against the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Let us tell you that earlier the Calcutta High Court has also commented on the state government and said that the state government has failed to stop the vandalism in the hospital, it is a failure of the machinery of the state government.
