Today, the banned organization ULFA(I) in Assam has claimed that it has planted bombs at 24 places across the state. After this, the police and security personnel have lost their sleep. The police have ordered several teams to conduct search operations at various places. Bomb disposal squad is also included in every police team. There is a panic-like situation in the entire state.
Cooperation sought from public
Police said bomb disposal squads have been sent to all the locations mentioned by ULFA (I) but there has been no report of recovery of any bomb or explosives so far. In an email purportedly sent to several media channels by the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) (Independent), the terror group has claimed that the bombs did not explode due to “technical failure”. Police gave a list identifying the exact location of 19 bombs and said the location of five more explosives could not be traced. Police, on the other hand, sought the public’s cooperation in defusing the bombs.
Alert sent to all districts
An official at the Assam Police headquarters said superintendents of police of all districts, especially those on the list of the anti-peace talks faction of the ULFA, have been alerted and asked to conduct a thorough search of the areas. “Bomb squads, metal detectors and sniffer dogs have been sent to every location. So far, we have not received any report of bombs being recovered,” he said.
Out of 24 places, 8 are from Guwahati
However, some local police officials from Nagaon, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar claimed that they have recovered some “bomb-like material” from the spot. Out of the 24 places, 8 are in Guwahati. These include an open ground at the Last Gate of Dispur, which is near the official residences of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other ministers. Another place is Satgaon Road leading to the army cantonment at Narengi in Guwahati. Apart from this, Ashram Road, Panbazar, Jorabat, Bhetapara, Maligaon and Rajgarh in the capital have also been mentioned as bomb hideouts. Several places in Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Tinsukia and Golaghat districts have also been named.
All surrounding roads are closed
For security reasons, the police have closed all the roads around the places mentioned in the mail. Senior police officers have reached all the places and are monitoring the search operation.
