According to data released by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Thursday, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) added 18.92 lakh new members in April this year. The provisional payroll data of EPFO shows that there has been an increase of 31.29 percent in April as compared to the figure of March this year.

The number of EPFO members increased by 10 per cent in April this year as compared to April last year. The ministry said, this jump in membership is due to increasing employment opportunities, growing awareness about employee benefits and the effectiveness of EPFO’s outreach programmes. Data shows that about 8.87 lakh new members have enrolled in the organisation during April.
18-25 age group gets most jobs
A notable aspect of the data is the dominance of the 18-25 age group, which accounts for 55.5 per cent of the total members. This reflects the trend of youth to join the organised workforce. According to the payroll data, about 14.53 lakh members exited the EPFO and later rejoined it. This figure is 23.15 per cent higher than in March this year.
About 2.49 lakh new women members
These members changed their jobs and rejoined establishments covered under the EPFO and opted to transfer their accumulations instead of applying for final settlement. Gender-wise analysis of payroll data shows that out of 8.87 lakh new members, about 2.49 lakh new members are women.
Bumper jobs in these states
About 3.91 lakh women joined EPFO in April. This is about 35.06 percent more than in March. State-wise analysis of payroll data shows that Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Haryana account for the highest number of new members. These states account for about 58.3 percent of the new members joining. 11.03 lakh new members joined from these states. Maharashtra is at the top in the country by adding 20.42 percent new members.
