Big names have participated
Actually, the Buchi Babu All India Invitation Cricket Tournament is being played in 2024 after a gap of 6 years. It is a red ball cricket tournament which was first played in 1909 and was considered the biggest domestic tournament in India before the introduction of the Ranji Trophy in 1934. Legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Srikkanth, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly have also participated in this tournament. The 2024 edition has started on August 15 and big names like India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Sarfaraz Khan are participating in it.
Tournament history
The Buchi Babu tournament is held in memory of Mothavarapu Venkata Mahipati Naidu. Mothavarapu Venkata Mahipati Naidu was also known as Buchi Babu Naidu. He played a major role in promoting cricket in Madras Presidency. He died in 1908, after which the first edition of this tournament was played in his name in 1909. Initially it was a local club tournament which turned into an invitational competition in the 1960s.
Teams
The Buchi Babu Tournament 2024 has 12 teams divided into four groups of three teams each. Each team will play one match with the other teams in its group and the last four group winners will advance to the semi-final round. The winners of the two semi-finals will then compete in the final for the title. The winning team of this tournament will be awarded a prize of Rs 3 lakh while the runner-up will get Rs 2 lakh.

- Group B: Railways, Gujarat, TNCA President’s XI
- Group C: Mumbai, Haryana, TNCA XI
- Group D: Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Baroda
Venue
The league stage matches of the tournament will be held in Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Salem and Natham. The first semi-final match will be held in Tirunelveli, while the second semi-final and the final match will be played in Natham.
Schedule
The tournament will see Round 1 matches played from August 15-18, followed by Round 2 from August 21-24 and then the third round from August 27-30. The top four teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals which will be played from September 2-5 and the final will be held from September 8-11.
