In her address at a rally in Kolkata, CM Mamata Banerjee, referring to violence-hit Bangladesh, said that she would keep the doors of West Bengal open for people stranded in distress from the neighboring country and give them shelter. Now a source in the central government said, ‘These are matters which the central government looks into.’

A source associated with the center said, ‘The state government has no authority on this issue (shelter to refugees) and hence her comments (CM Mamata Banerjee) are completely wrong.’ CM Mamata Banerjee had mentioned the United Nations resolution on refugees in support of her statement. In the last few days, the law and order situation in Bangladesh has deteriorated and due to this there is a possibility of a humanitarian crisis there. CM Banerjee said, ‘I should not speak on the affairs of Bangladesh, because it is a sovereign nation and whatever should be said on this issue is a matter of the Center.’

At the Trinamool Congress’ ‘Shaheed Diwas’ rally, CM Mamata Banerjee said, “I can tell you that if helpless people knock on the door of Bengal, we will definitely give them shelter.” Demonstrations have been going on for several days in Bangladesh demanding reforms in the reservation system in government jobs and curfew was imposed across the country on Saturday when the situation worsened. Military forces patrolled various parts of the national capital Dhaka. The protesters are demanding the abolition of the system of giving up to 30 percent reservation in government jobs to relatives of former soldiers who fought in Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
