Can Paracetamol Damage the Liver: Paracetamol is one of the most commonly used medicines that provides relief from pain and fever. This medicine is the most common and is easily available over the counter. Most doctors consider paracetamol to be the safest medicine because its side effects are less than other painkillers. However, excessive dose of paracetamol can be dangerous for the liver. Many people believe that this medicine can damage the liver. Is paracetamol really dangerous for the liver? Let’s know about this from a liver doctor.
Dr Anil Arora, chairman of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences at Sir Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi, told AnyTV That most of the medicines are metabolized in our liver and this affects liver health. Paracetamol is also metabolized in the liver and if taken in the right quantity, then there is no harm to the liver. It is considered to be the safest medicine and that is why this medicine is available over the counter in India as well as America and European countries. However, taking it in excessive doses can cause damage to the liver.
According to liver experts, in case of fever or pain, paracetamol tablets can be taken 2 or 3 times a day as per the need. Often doctors decide the dosage according to the weight of the people and advise taking the medicine accordingly. Paracetamol tablets are considered safer than other painkillers, because it does not irritate the stomach and its side effects are very less. Paracetamol can be taken for a long time on the advice of the doctor. Paracetamol or any medicine should not be taken without reason. This can harm health.
Dr Arora said that the biggest reason for acute liver failure in America and Europe is paracetamol poisoning. However, this condition arises when a person consumes 10 or 20 paracetamol tablets at once. Taking such a high dose can lead to acute liver failure and if the person is not treated at the right time, he may die. Often in America and Europe, people consume many paracetamol tablets at once to commit suicide. However, there are many ways to save people’s lives in such a condition.
What are the reasons for liver damage? On this, Dr. Anil Arora said that diabetes, hepatitis infection, alcohol and obesity are considered to be the most harmful for the liver. These are the biggest causes of liver damage. However, medicines for many diseases including TB and painkillers also damage the liver. People who have any liver related disease should also consult a doctor before taking paracetamol.
