Toronto. Canadian aerospace company MDA is providing satellite imagery to help Ukraine fight Russian aggression. The Ontario-based company said in a statement that the Canadian government has allowed MDA to collect satellite imagery of restricted areas of Ukraine using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Space.com reported in a report.
MDA CEO Mike Greenlee said in a statement, “Photos captured by MDA’s SAR technology, which are unique for their ability to see through all weather and cloud conditions, can be used to provide comprehensive near-real-time access to Ukrainian government officials.” It will be merged and analyzed with other sources of imagery from commercial Earth observation companies to develop a timely intelligence report.”
He said, “We are honored that we are able to use our radar satellite capabilities to contribute to these international efforts and continue to do everything to the best of our ability to help the Government of Ukraine protect its citizens.” Will keep.”
The radar capabilities of the MDA are significant, the report said. For example, the company built Radarsat-2, which has been circling our planet since December 2007, as well as the three-spacecraft Radarsat constellation, which launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in June 2019. was launched into Earth orbit.
Greenly’s statement did not specify which other companies’ imagery MDA would look at. Other possibilities include SAR photos of Ukraine by Colorado-based Capella Space.
The spacecraft, operated by Maxar Technologies, Planet and BlackSky, are photographing the invasion and its effects in optical light, the report said. For example, Maxar recently released a series of shots that show heavy damage to grocery stores, homes and other civilian buildings that surround the city of Mariupol, Ukraine.
