Officials said the task force would not only study and recommend cases of jawans taking their own lives but would also prepare reports on cases involving each other’s lives. Cases of mutual firing during the last few months will be included in this. The task force met last week. An official said that the work is going on. First the draft report will be prepared and it will be distributed among the CAPFs for final comments. After this it will be handed over to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The task force is headed by IPS officer VSK Kaumudi. He is the Special Secretary, Internal Security in the ministry. The workforce also includes Special/Additional IG rank officers from BSF, ITBP, CISF, SSB and Assam Rifles. The task force, formed in December last year, was earlier headed by CRPF DG Kuldeep Singh.
According to the December 2021 data shared by the government in Parliament, there have been 25 incidents of mutual firing in the CAPFs during the year 2019-2021. Maximum 11 cases were reported in CRPF and 9 cases in BSF. However, the death toll in these incidents was not given. According to government data updated in August last year, 680 central forces personnel committed suicide in the last six years. Now their number has crossed 700. More than 10 lakh jawans and employees are employed in CAPF.
