Uttara Kannada. The Karnataka Police has registered an FIR against Popular Front of India (PFI) activists, including a lawyer, for allegedly attempting to shut down shops and observing a bandh against the High Court’s special bench verdict on the hijab issue. The police gave this information on Wednesday. According to the police, a case has been registered against the accused persons at Bhatkal police station. Cases have been registered against Azim Ahmed, Mohideen Abir, Shariq and advocate Taimur Hussain Gawai.
The police have registered an FIR under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting) and 290 (public nuisance). On March 15, the accused had forcibly closed shops and commercial establishments against the High Court’s decision on the hijab controversy.
The coastal town of Bhatkal is considered a communally sensitive area and police have beefed up security in the area. The ‘Tanjim’ organization in Bhatkal had called for a bandh in the town and many traders voluntarily closed their shops.
The ruling BJP and Hindutva organizations have alleged that the PFI, Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Campus Front of India (CFI) are behind the escalation of the hijab controversy in the state.
A special bench of the Karnataka High Court, which dismissed the petitions of students insisting on wearing hijab, said that the unseen hands behind increasing the hijab crisis should be probed and brought to the fore at the earliest.
