The rate of student suicide in India has become more than the rate of population growth in the country. This shocking fact has been stated in a report. Based on the data of NCRB, the report said that this crisis is increasing continuously. Every year the rate of suicide increases by 2 percent, while the number of students committing suicide is increasing by 4 percent. This is the situation when many cases of suicide do not even come to light. The title of the report prepared by IC3 Institute is ‘Student suicide: A growing epidemic in India’.
The report says, ‘In the last two decades, cases of student suicide have increased at the rate of 4 percent. This is double the national average. Of the total students who committed suicide in 2022, 53 percent were boys. Between 2021 and 2022, there was a 6 percent decrease in cases of male students committing suicide. At the same time, there has been a 7 percent increase in cases of girls committing suicide.’ This figure is also a matter of concern and shows how girls are also under pressure to get top marks in education.
This report says, ‘Cases of student suicide have increased so rapidly that it is more than the population growth rate and the average of total suicide cases. In the last decade, the number of people aged zero to 24 years in India has come down from 58.2 crores to 58.1 crores. At the same time, cases of student suicide have gone up from 6,654 to 13,044.’ IC3 Institute is a voluntary organization that helps in training school administrations across the world. The report says that the average number of students committing suicide is high in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. One-third of the students committing suicide across the country come from these states only.
If we talk about the states and union territories of South India, 29% of the total students who commit suicide in the country are from here. Apart from this, Rajasthan comes at number 10 in this case. News of students committing suicide often comes from Kota city of Rajasthan. This report is based on the data of the National Crime Records Bureau, which is prepared by looking at the FIRs registered across the country. It is also worth noting that many cases of suicide are not even reported because people avoid telling it socially. Apart from this, legal complexities also trouble people.
