New Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Customs Superintendent Krishna Kumar posted at the Air Cargo Complex in Sahar, Mumbai for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh 20 thousand from a custom house agent (CHA) firm.
The accused was arrested on 2 August after detailed verification and monitoring process. A case was registered against Krishna Kumar and other unknown public servants and private persons based on the complaint of the CHA firm.
The complaint alleged that the accused officer was demanding a bribe at the rate of Rs 10 per kg from himself and his senior officials to ensure smooth withdrawal of imported goods.
Despite the complainant’s refusal, the accused allegedly stood firm on his demand and even threatened, resulting in a consignment of goods intentionally.
The verification made in the presence of independent witnesses between July 25 and 1 August confirmed the demand for illegal bribe through dialogue and strong evidence.
The CBI said that Krishna Kumar had asked for 6 lakh rupees for the already cleaned goods, out of which 5.8 lakh rupees for their senior officers and Rs 20,000 for himself.
Additionally, he demanded payment at the rate of Rs 10 lakh to release the currently kept and at the rate of Rs 10 lakh per kg for future goods.
In the trap laid by CBI officials, the accused was caught red handed taking cash of Rs 10 lakh 20 thousand, after which he was produced in the court, where he was sent to police custody till 6 August.
An official said that investigation is still going on in this case.
