New Delhi/Kolkata. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including a police revolver and foreign made firearms, during raids at different locations in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. The officers provided this information. Missing documents of ED have also been claimed to have been recovered. After the recovery of weapons, Trinamool Congress and BJP have leveled allegations and counter-allegations against each other.
Officials said that the raid was conducted in connection with the incident of attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team by supporters of Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh. Officials said a team of CBI, bomb disposal squad, National Security Guard (NSG), central paramilitary forces and West Bengal Police raided a village on the banks of Sunderbans in North 24 Parganas district.

CBI spokesperson said, “During the investigation of this case, information was received that the lost luggage and other items from the ED team may have been kept hidden in the house of a close friend of Shaikh in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas. After this, the CBI team along with CRPF personnel raided two locations in Sandeshkhali. Officials said that a huge quantity of small arms and ammunition, including foreign-made revolvers, were recovered in the operation. The spokesperson said that during the raid, CBI recovered three foreign made revolvers and one pistol, one Indian made revolver, one police revolver, one country made pistol, 50 cartridges of Point 45 caliber, 120 cartridges of 9 mm, 50 cartridges of Point 380 caliber and 8 cartridges of Point 32 caliber were recovered.

Claim of recovery of important documents
CBI spokesperson said in his statement that apart from this, many prosecutable documents related to Shahjahan have also been recovered. Some objects were also recovered, which are suspected to be country-made bombs. They are being neutralized by the NSG team. According to officials, the operation was carried out across Sandeshkhali to raid the targeted locations, while NSG units were tasked to handle the explosives recovered during the operation.

Sources said that five teams of CBI officers with the help of West Bengal Police and central forces including National Security Guard (NSG) raided a house in Sarberia in Sandeshkhali area in North 24 Parganas district. The officer said that we had received intelligence about storage of huge quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives. CBI sources said that the owner of the house is a relative of Shahjahan Sheikh, who has been identified as Abu Talib Mulla. He further said, ‘It is not yet clear why such a large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosive materials were kept inside the house.’

Security forces surrounded the house which is located amidst water bodies used for fish farming. Central forces used metal detectors outside the house to check whether any weapons and ammunition were buried anywhere else. A robotic device has also been used for this work. Let us tell you that the Enforcement Directorate team was attacked on January 5 in Sandeshkhali when it had gone to raid Sheikh’s premises in connection with the alleged ration scam. Sheikh was arrested by West Bengal Police on 29 February. Three ED officers were injured in the attack by a mob of about 1,000 people.
