Bhopal. Elections are going to be held in Madhya Pradesh in the month of June for three Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant. Two of these places are sure to go to the account of BJP and one Congress. By selecting the names of candidates for these elections, BJP and Congress may try to portray themselves as OBC friendly and this is also a challenge for them. The tenure of three Rajya Sabha MPs from Madhya Pradesh — Congress’s Vivek Tankha and BJP’s MJ Akbar and Sampatiya Uikey — are ending in June. Elections are to be held for these three seats. Notification for the election has been issued and nominations will be filled by May 31. Overall, the name of the candidate will have to be decided before 31.
At present, the issue of reservation for Other Backward Classes is hot in the state. For a long time, allegations and counter-allegations have been going on between the Congress and the BJP for giving reservation to OBCs in urban body and panchayat elections. Both the parties have been advocating for 27 per cent reservation for OBCs for a long time. The Backward Classes Welfare Commission’s report during the BJP’s rule talked about giving 35 percent reservation to OBCs. The matter of giving reservation to OBCs in Panchayat and urban bodies reached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court did not agree with the government’s arguments and gave the decision to hold elections in the state without OBC reservation. Shivraj government is promising to give reservation to the backward classes.
Now elections are to be held for three Rajya Sabha seats in the state. Both the parties have been calling themselves great benefactors of the OBC class. In such a situation, through the candidature in the first coming Rajya Sabha elections, there is a big challenge for political parties to declare themselves as OBC friendly.
In the state, BJP has a big face of former Chief Minister Uma Bharti, while Congress has former Union Minister Arun Yadav. Now it has to be seen whether the BJP makes a person belonging to this class a Rajya Sabha candidate to woo the backward class or selects the candidate on the basis of other political mathematics. This is the position of Congress. Congress can play big bets by fielding Yadav. Both the political parties can play the stake of wooing the voter in the urban body and panchayat elections by making OBC candidates. It cannot be denied.
