Chandigarh. The biggest plantation campaign in the history of Chandigarh was successfully concluded today on the occasion of ‘Van Mahotsav 2025’ under the leadership of Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab and UT Chandigarh. This campaign became an unprecedented example of the city’s environmental commitment. On the same day, a total of 1,05,874 plants were planted at 253 pre-determined places across the city. From busy centers in the city to residential areas, parks, institutional complexes and road dividers, echoed with environmental awareness everywhere. The program not only reflects the city’s deep commitment to environmental stability, but also demonstrates the strong personal resolve of the administrator of making Chandigarh one of the most green and climate-friendly cities in India.
Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, showing an extraordinary level of personal participation, planted himself at 23 different places across the city. Addressing the public on the occasion, he said that “Van Mahotsav is not just about planting trees; it is about hope, balance and future.” He described it as a green movement, which should resonate in every house, every school and every institute in Chandigarh.
He recalled the intense words of freedom fighter Kanaiyalal Maniklal Munshi that “trees mean water, water to bread and bread”, emphasizing that the existence of human life is associated with the existence of trees. He called upon to work with immediate and strong confidence citing global figures. Chandigarh, already known for its notable 51.54% Green Cover, has once again increased the national standard with this city-wide campaign.
The administrator reported that this year, more than 5 lakh saplings are to be planted in the entire union territory, which reflects the administration’s approach to long -term ecological restoration. To provide more credibility to this green commitment, the Governor also inaugurated three major environmental policy structure like ‘Green Chandigarh Action Plan’, ‘State Action Plan on Climate Change’ and ‘Chandigarh Trees Map’ during the program.
Chandigarh is committed to becoming a city with net zero emission by 2030. He also mentioned India’s deep cultural reverence for trees and campaigns like Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘one tree mother’s name’, which have converted environmental consciousness into a mass movement. On this occasion, Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, Principal Secretary of Governor Vivek Pratap Singh and many senior officials of Chandigarh administration were present.
