Chandigarh Municipal Corporation meeting: uproar over sweets, opposition walkout, uproar on property tax

Chandigarh The meeting of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Sadan was filled with uproar today. In the joy of getting a grant of Rs 238 crore to the corporation, the opposition reacted sharply to the BJP distributing sweets and walked out of the House. Councilors of Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) created a ruckus in front of the mayor, alleging insensitivity to the victims of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. At the beginning of the meeting, the death of tourists killed in the Pahalgam attack and former Mayor Rajbala Malik was mourned. Subsequently, the councilor of the ruling party Kanwarjeet Rana praised Mayor Harpreet Kaur for a grant of Rs 238 crore. As soon as the distribution of sweets was announced, the opposition started a ruckus.
Gurpreet Gabi of Congress said that the fire of the martyrs of Pahalgam has not been cold yet and sweets are being distributed here. AAP and Congress councilors staged a sit -in outside the meeting and accused the BJP of misleading the public. He also created a ruckus on the issue of property tax and demanded that it be fully withdrawn.
The opposition alleged that the administration has not yet given money to the corporation and the BJP is celebrating. He accused the mayor of withdrawing money from the corporation’s pension fund and imposing property tax on people. Congress deputy mayor Taruna Mehta said that the BJP had earlier claimed a grant of 92 crores, but did not give any account.
He spoke of bringing Ganga water to remove lemon-chills and “negativity” to protect the corporation from “evil eye”. Saurabh Joshi, councilor of the ruling party, in view of the behavior of the opposition, demanded a suspension of him for three meetings. Kanwarjeet Rana called the mayor to become “Rani Laxmibai”. Maheshindra Sidhu of BJP accused the opposition of “crossing the limits of shamelessness”.
Following the opposition’s walkout, the House discussed various issues, including plastic waste management, fire service act, hiring JCB and tipper at the dumping ground, and C&D West processing plants. The issue of giving the corporation’s land to the administration for multi -specialty hospitals in Manimajra was also discussed. The “One Nation, One Election” proposal was also passed.
