Chandra Shekhar Azad
New Delhi: Today is the birth anniversary of the great revolutionary Chandrashekhar Azad who played an important role in liberating India from the British. He was born on 23 July 1906 at a place called Bhabra in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. His full name in childhood was Chandrashekhar Tiwari but at the age of 14 something happened to him, after which the nickname ‘Azad’ became his identity.
Showed attitude at the age of 14
Chandrashekhar Azad went to study in Banaras at the age of 14. In the year 1920-21, he was influenced by Gandhiji and joined his non-cooperation movement. During this time he was arrested and presented before the judge. When the judge asked his name, he told his name as Azad. Chandrashekhar told his father’s name as Swatantrata and his place of residence as jail. After this, the judge punished him with 15 lashes.
But Chandrashekhar’s attitude did not soften. He kept chanting Vande Mataram on every blow of the whip. After this, Chandrashekhar became famous in public life by the name of Azad. His birthplace Bhavra is now called Azadnagar.
Disillusionment with Congress
When the Chauri Chaura incident happened in 1922, Gandhiji withdrew the movement. After this Azad became disillusioned with the Congress. During this time Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, Sachindranath Sanyal, Yogeshchandra Chatterjee formed a group Hindustani Prajatantrik Sangh in 1924 with the revolutionaries of North India. Chandrashekhar Azad joined it.
Chandrashekhar Azad became very famous when British police officer SP Saunders was shot dead in Lahore in 1928 and Lala Lajpat Rai’s death was avenged. Azad helped Bhagat Singh a lot during this time. Chandrashekhar shot Saunders’ bodyguard.
He gave up his life in Alfred Park
Chandrashekhar had called for a socialist revolution in Alfred Park, Allahabad in the year 1931. He used to say that the British would never be able to catch him nor would the British government be able to hang him. That is why he sacrificed his life in this park on 27 February 1931 while facing the bullets of the British.
