Rajnandgaon(Naiduniya News). The webinar was organized by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College Hospital located in Pendri Ward of the city. In which information about the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Amendment Act 2021 was given to the doctors. 317 doctors from across the country participated in the webinar.
Meena Armo, HOD, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the hospital said that FOGSI Vice President Dr. MC Patel was the keynote speaker. NHM Deputy Director Dr. Sumitra Yadav also gave detailed information about MTP Act through webinar. He informed that the High Court has allowed Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) of a woman who has completed 22 weeks of pregnancy as the fetus was suffering from several abnormalities.
This act has been amended in 2021. According to the change, abortion is now legally allowed up to 24 weeks, but for this it is necessary to have a specific reason.
Need to organize webinar
Speakers said that many doctors are not aware of the changes made in the law. The major provisions of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Act 2021, the importance, issues related to women’s rights were discussed in detail in the webinar. It was told that the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 (MTP Act) was passed due to the progress made in the field of medical science regarding safe abortion.
Doctor’s opinion necessary for abortion
In the webinar, it was told by the speakers that for termination of pregnancy up to 24 weeks, the opinion of registered doctors would be necessary. In case of serious fetal abnormalities, termination of pregnancy after 24 weeks requires the opinion of a state-level medical board. The name and other information of a woman who terminates the pregnancy shall not be disclosed to anyone except a person authorized under the present law.
In the webinar, Dr. Tripti Nagaria, HOD, JNMC, Dr. Nirmala Yadav, Senior Gynecologist, Dr. Sumitra Yadav, Unit Head Professor, MGM Medical College Hospital, Indore, Dr. Vimal Khunte, Senior Gynecologist, ASP Suresh Choubey as Judicial Advisor, Senior Advocate Mukesh Sharma and others attended. Dr. Meena Armo as chairperson from MCH and Dr. Arpana Verma as assistant professor and other doctors were also involved from the Department of Gynecology from MCH.
