Indian teenager R Pragnananda continues his stellar run after defeating world No. 1 chess player Magnus Carlsen in the AirThings Masters online rapid chess tournament. On Tuesday, in the 10th and 12th rounds, she defeated Grandmaster Andre Espenko and Alexander Kostanyuk. The 16-year-old recorded two victories while drawing a draw against Nodribek Abdustorov. However, he was defeated by Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachi. Pragnananda, despite two wins and a draw, remains in 12th place with 15 points.
He defeated Andre, a Russian player of higher rating than himself, in 42 moves. Earlier, the day started with a draw against Abdustarov. After losing to Nepomniachi, Pragnananda defeated former women’s world champion Kostaniyuk in a 63-move match. Pragnananda will now take on Germany’s Vincent Kemmer, America’s Hans Mok Niemann and Russia’s Vladislav Artemiev in the 13th, 14th and 15th rounds.
Nepomniachi, who lost his World Championship bout to Carlsen last month, remains on top with 27 points. Carlsen made a comeback from a loss to Pragnananda, defeating Kwang Liam Lay and Yan Christoph Duda, but lost to Canada’s Eric Hansen. He is joint second with Artemiev and Kemar with 20 points.
Talking about Pragnananda, his sister Vaishali started playing chess with passion. Later the brother made her a part of his life. When young children of her age were attracted to toys, she had understood all the nuances of the game by then.
