Beijing: The scientist who was the first to publish information related to the sequence decode of the Covid-19 virus in China said that he has been allowed to return to his laboratory after days of protests. Scientist Zhang Yongzhen wrote in a social media post on Wednesday that authorities had “tentatively agreed” to let him and his team into the laboratory and continue their research.
Scientists were protesting outside the lab
Zhang and his team were suddenly asked to leave the laboratory, following which they were protesting outside their laboratory. This development indicates increasing pressure from Beijing on scientists doing research on coronavirus. The Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center had earlier said that Zhang’s laboratory was being renovated and was closed for security reasons. But Zhang, by contrast, said his team was given no choice and the new laboratory did not meet safety standards for research.
China is showing trickery
This incident involving Zhang shows how China is controlling information related to the virus. An investigation by The Associated Press found that the government had blocked domestic and international efforts to detect the coronavirus from the early days of its spread. This trend is still continuing, laboratories are closed, foreign scientists have been asked to leave the country and Chinese researchers have been banned from leaving the country. (AP)
