Beijing: China began the first sea trials of its third aircraft carrier ‘Fujian’ on Wednesday. ‘Fujian’ is being described as the most advanced domestic warship. Beijing has started testing this warship by increasing its naval power amid increasing tensions with the US in the disputed South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. This aircraft carrier will increase China’s maritime power.

The warship left Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard on Wednesday morning for sea trials, the state-owned Xinhua news agency reported. During the test, the stability of the aircraft carrier including its propulsion power and reliability of electrical systems will be tested. Fujian was launched in June 2022, having completed mooring trials, equipment adjustment and other required tests.
China’s plan
The warship has also met the technical requirements required for sea trials. Ahead of the test, China has imposed controls on maritime traffic around the mouth of the Yangtze River. According to the news, traffic control will remain in place till May 9. According to earlier official reports, China plans to deploy five to six aircraft carriers in the disputed South China Sea and Taiwan Strait by 2035.

Beijing claims control over most of the South China Sea, while the Taiwan Strait separates mainland China from Taiwan. Not only this, China is also increasing its power in the Indian Ocean. Currently, the Chinese Navy is facing a standoff with US-backed Philippines naval ships in the South China Sea. Philippines is trying to assert its claim on ‘Second Thomas Island’ in the South China Sea, while China is strongly opposing it. China claims most of the South China Sea.
