Beijing: A Chinese court has sentenced a former banker to death for taking a bribe of $151 million. China’s state news agency ‘Xinhua’ reported on Wednesday that Bai Tianhui, former general manager of China Huarong International Holdings (CHIH), was sentenced to death by a court in Tianjin. According to the verdict given by the court, the former banker has also been stripped of lifelong political rights and all his property has been confiscated.
Damage to the country’s interests
The illegal income of the former banker will be recovered and deposited in the government treasury. The court said that Bai misused his position to help others in acquisitions and financing of projects in exchange for huge sums of money. The court said that Bai is guilty of bribery. The amount taken as bribe is huge, the circumstances of the crime are serious and it has a bad social impact. It has also caused great damage to the interests of the country and the people.
Lai Xiaomin was also sentenced to death
Many Chinese officials have been sentenced as part of the anti-corruption campaign since Chinese President Xi Jinping took power in 2012. Most confessed their guilt and in return were sentenced to long prison terms instead of the death penalty. Bai is the second Chinese official to be sentenced to death for corruption. In January 2021, the same court also sentenced former CHAM chairman Lai Xiaomin to death. (Language)
