Rajkot. Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Saturday said the adaptation of technology in the judiciary is not only about modernization but is also a strategic step towards democratizing access to justice. He also underlined the need to train lawyers to use technology.
Justice Chandrachud, addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a new District Court building here, said that taking advantage of these advancements will help in bridging the gap and increasing efficiency and ensure that justice delivery is free from geographical and technological constraints. Do not be interrupted.
He also inaugurated the AI-based ‘Text-to-Speech Call-Out System’ from the venue. Highlighting the importance of district courts, Justice Chandrachud said, “These courts hold an important place in ensuring the right to justice and are the cornerstone of the ideals of our Constitution in envisioning a society where every citizen has the right to justice. That’s for sure.”
The CJI also mentioned his visit to the temples of Somnath and Dwarka. He said the ‘Dhwaj’ (flag) of the Dwarkadhish temple, which is similar to that of the Lord Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha, holds a special meaning for the people of the judicial community. He said, “See this universality of change in our nation that binds us all together. This ‘flag’ has a special meaning for us, and the meaning that the ‘flag’ gives us is that there is a unifying power over us all as lawyers, judges and citizens – and that unifying power is our humanity, Which is governed by the rule of law and the Constitution of India.”
He further said, “Beyond just the physical structure, our building represents a commitment and a promise – a promise that within its walls there will be speed, access and fairness in the pursuit of justice.” Talking about the ‘zero waste facility’ at the Somnath temple, Justice Chandrachud said it should become an inspiration to convert every court system in the state into a “zero waste” facility. “Then we will be truly inspired by the ideals of this great temple which reflects the landscape of the state of Gujarat,” he said.
Referring to a conference room and a training room equipped with the latest audio-video equipment and systems in the court complex, Justice Chandrachud said, “This is the hybrid and online conference system implemented in the chambers of the Supreme Court in keeping with the changing times and ensuring speedy justice. “is leveraging technologies to do so.” He also appealed to the Principal District Judge to ensure that lawyers are trained in the use of technology and they should not be isolated from judges in that aspect.
