Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai said on Thursday that he would vacate his government house on time after retirement. Although, due to lack of time, they will not get suitable housing till their retirement in November, the government house is sure to vacate within the stipulated time under the rules. CJI Br Gavai said this at the farewell ceremony of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia. Justice Dhulia is retiring on August 9, so the Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association (SCAORA) organized a farewell program for him.
Former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has vacated his government house in August, he retired on 8 November 2024. Taking an unprecedented step, the Supreme Court administration wrote a letter to the Central Government requesting to vacate the government residence on Krishna Menon Marg. It was mentioned in the letter that former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud stayed in that residence for more than the scheduled time frame.
Regarding the delay in vacating the housing, Justice Chandrachud had said that there is a lot of work left in the new residence allotted and he is facing a lot of difficulty in getting a rented house. He had said that both his daughters are suffering from rare diseases, so they have to take housing keeping in mind their condition. SJI Gavai said, ‘We will always remember their contribution to the judiciary. After retirement, he will remain in Delhi and will be one of the judges who will immediately vacate their residence. The next day of retirement. ‘
Regarding his retirement, Chief Justice BR Gavai said, ‘In fact, it is rare. I wish I could have done this till 24 November. I will not get time to find a suitable habitat, but I assure you that I will leave before whatever time I get according to the rules, but Justice Dhulia has set a very good example. I am sure many of us can follow them. ‘
CJI Gawai said, “One day Justice Sundashu Dhulia told me that they live only at two houses, but our profession is such that we are not able to meet often. We have done that after November 24 I will play golf and then we will often meet. I wish him all the best for the future.” Senior advocates, Supreme Court and High Court judges were also present in the program.
