Kolkata. Kolkata Police on Sunday detained a Class 12 student for posting inflammatory, offensive comments and death threats against West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on her social media handles. The incident comes after the rape and murder of a PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. A section of social media users, including TMC leaders, had expressed concern over the Instagram post, which also mentioned Indira Gandhi. These people requested the police to take action.
A statement from Kolkata Police said that a complaint was received that the accused student had uploaded three Instagram stories related to the recent incident at RG Kar Hospital. In which the photo and identity of the victim was disclosed, which is a crime. Also, the accused also shared two stories against the West Bengal CM. Which contained objectionable comments and death threats. These posts were inflammatory and could create social unrest at any time and promote hatred among the community.

It was told that the accused student Kirti studies in 12th class. Her family told the media that the girl made a mistake. She made this mistake while being carried away by emotions. She understood about it later, we apologize. The arrested girl will be produced in court on Monday. Her family and the entire neighborhood are in shock. A neighbor told AnyTV that ‘she is a child, she did this without understanding. It was a mistake. They are sad about it. We hope the girl will be released soon.’ The family is taking legal advice to get bail. Other neighbors said that ‘they are good people, we hope the girl will get bail.’

Police issued notices to 1,000 people
So far, the police have issued notices to about 1,000 people for spreading misinformation and revealing the identity of the victim in the RG Kar case. Two doctors – Kunal Sarkar and Suvarna Goswami – have also been summoned by the police for posting misinformation. They will visit the police headquarters amid the doctors’ rally. However, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh, who was among those who objected to this post, wrote on Instagram that ‘If you want to protest, do it a hundred times with proper language and logic. But the police will warn you for misinformation, deliberate provocation.’
