Bangalore. Schools and colleges across the state reopened on Wednesday following the Karnataka High Court’s decision on the hijab controversy. Karnataka witnessed long protests amid the hijab controversy. Classes have resumed normally in all educational institutions after a special bench of the High Court on Tuesday dismissed petitions seeking permission to hijab in classes.
However, the protests still do not appear to have ended completely. At least 22 students at Chikkamagaluru IDSG College protested demanding their right to wear hijab. They gathered at the entrance of the college and protested carrying placards.
Students of Madhugiri Government College in Tumakuru district also protested against not allowing hijab in classes.
Schools and colleges saw mostly full attendance and a large number of girl students, including those from minority communities, entered classes without the hijab as per the prescribed dress.
Pre-university education institutions also resumed operations in the coastal city of Udupi amid police protection. The Udupi Pre-University College, where the agitation over the hijab controversy had intensified and the law and order situation also appeared to be in trouble, has also started functioning without any disturbance.
Six girl students, who started the movement, have said they will not attend classes until they are allowed to wear the hijab. BJP MLA from Udupi Raghupati Bhat, who is also the president of the pre-university college, has requested him to attend the classes by following the rules of uniform. He has also assured that the school management will make arrangements to compensate for the loss of classes and they should not have any bitterness towards them. However, the girls have turned down the offer.
Udupi district administration has continued prohibitory orders on gatherings, festivals, protests. The police department has deputed three platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and five platoons of District Armed Reserve (DAR) to Udupi.
Students attended classes normally in Shivamogga district, which witnessed large-scale violence after the killing of Bajrang Dal activist Harsha.
Many students in Yadgir district have returned home after the college management refused them permission to wear hijab for the preliminary examination. In Chikkaballapur, the government college management asked a girl student going to classes wearing a hijab to go to a separate room and remove the hijab.
