New Delhi. The Delhi government on Monday ordered immediate closure of all private and government-aided schools. These schools have not been closed for holidays despite the intense heat and severe heat wave. In a circular, the education department said that all schools have been directed to have summer vacation from May 11 to June 30 for this academic year, although it has been observed that some schools are still open.
The Education Department further said, ‘…all government schools are closed with effect from 11.05.24, however, it is observed that some government aided and unaided recognized private schools are open even during the ongoing scorching heat. Therefore, heads of all government aided and unaided recognized private schools of Delhi are advised to close the schools for summer vacation with immediate effect.
Delhi NCR has been experiencing severe heat since last few days. On Monday, the temperature in Najafgarh in the south-west area of Delhi reached 47.8 degrees Celsius. This is the hottest place of the year. In Delhi, the average temperature of the city was recorded at 44.4 degrees on Sunday. At the same time, the temperature was 43.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 42.5 degrees Celsius on Friday.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the next five days and has predicted heat wave in many parts of Delhi and severe heat wave in other areas. IMD has predicted, ‘The maximum temperature is likely to increase by about 2-3 degrees Celsius in many parts of northwest and central India in the next 5 days.
IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said that the current heat wave condition will continue till next week. Kumar said, ‘Generally, May is considered to be the hottest month. If there is no rainfall activity in North India, the temperature normally crosses 45 degrees Celsius. This situation will continue for the next 5 days in Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. We have issued a red alert. Heat wave conditions will persist in UP for the next 3 days. Heat wave will continue in Northern Madhya Pradesh for 4 days. We have issued an orange alert for the area.
