ED has made a big claim against Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi liquor scam case. The agency has told the court that he was misleading and that is why the investigating agency is still investigating his role in this scam. ED’s remand application said that 55 year old Arvind Kejriwal has not yet shared his mobile passwords. After the court hearing in the case, Kejriwal has been sent to Tihar Jail till April 15. He has been kept alone in the barrack of Tihar Jail No. 2 and will spend his first night in Tihar Jail on Monday.
What permission has Arvind Kejriwal been given in jail?
According to jail rules, any prisoner can give the names of 10 people to the jail administration whom he wants to meet while in jail. Kejriwal has so far given the names of only 6 people to the Tihar Jail administration.
The jail authorities have also been asked to give Kejriwal three books – copies of the Bhagavad Gita and the Ramayana, and journalist Neerja Chaudhary’s book How Prime Ministers Decide.
Kejriwal can also meet his wife Sunita Kejriwal during his stay in jail.
It is unclear whether Kejriwal will be allowed more meetings with government officials and ministers, given that he remains the Chief Minister of Delhi. The current jail rules do not allow this, and it could also lead to a possible clash between the AAP and the central government.
The ruling BJP at the Center has repeatedly asked Kejriwal to resign, while AAP has equally firmly said that he will not step down. He said he has only been accused and not convicted.
Given Kejriwal’s medical condition and the risk of potentially severe allergic reactions, the court also said he could use bed linen from home.
They will also receive supplies of essential medicines and medical equipment, including monitoring blood sugar levels. Kejriwal will also be given home-cooked food as he is on a special diet.
Generally, prisoners lodged in Tihar Jail get dal, vegetable and five rotis or rice twice a day apart from a cup of tea in the morning and evening as per jail rules.
Arvind Kejriwal may also wear a locket, which has religious significance.
How will Arvind Kejriwal spend his days and nights?
Arvind Kejriwal and other prisoners in Tihar Jail No. 2 will start their day at sunrise, which is currently around 6:30 am. The prisoners will get tea and bread for breakfast.
After morning bath, Kejriwal will leave for the court (if a hearing is scheduled) or sit for a meeting with his legal team. Lunch will be between 10:30 am and 11 am.
The prisoners are confined to their cells till 3 pm, after which they get a cup of tea and two biscuits.
Dinner takes place at 5:30 pm, after which the prisoners are locked up for the night by 7 pm.
Kejriwal can watch television except during scheduled jail activities like meals and lock-up. 18 to 20 channels are allowed, including news, entertainment and sports.
