of the current financial year India’s coal imports in the first quarter rose 5.7 percent to 75.2 million tonnes, as against 71.1 million tonnes in the same period of the previous fiscal. According to data compiled by e-commerce platform Mjunction Services Ltd, the country’s coal imports also rose 6.59 percent to 22.9 million tonnes in June, as against 21.5 million tonnes in the same period of the previous fiscal. Mjunction Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Vinay Verma said that in view of the available surplus coal and the slowdown in industrial activity during the monsoon, the import demand may remain low in the coming month.
Import of coking coal increased
Out of the total imports during June 2024, non-coking coal imports stood at 14.1 million tonnes, higher than 13.2 million tonnes imported in June last year. Coking coal imports stood at 54.5 lakh tonnes as against 53.3 lakh tonnes imported in June 2023. Non-coking coal imports stood at 49.1 million tonnes in the April-June quarter, higher than 46.5 million tonnes imported in the same period last year. Coking coal imports stood at 15.4 million tonnes in the April-June quarter as against 15.2 million tonnes in the same period a year ago.
Imports are constantly increasing
India’s coal imports grew by 7.7 per cent to 268.2 million tonnes in FY 2023-24 as against 249 million tonnes in FY 2022-23. Domestic coal production grew by 11.71 per cent to 997.8 million tonnes in the last fiscal as against 893.1 million tonnes in 2022-23.
