New Delhi. Scientists say that due to climate change, coffee, almond and tomato crops are being affected the most worldwide. Italy is Europe’s largest tomato producer and supplies an average of 6-7 million metric tons of tomatoes every year.
Last year, however, the tomato crop in northern Italy declined by 19 per cent and is expected to decline further.
This is happening because of the climate in Italy. At one time the warm weather here was suitable for tomato crop, but now it is wintering here and there is also a possibility of rain.
Due to the cold weather, the tomato crop matures late and in the year 2019 such a condition had happened that only half of the crop was ready on time.
If this situation continues, then soon there will be a shortage of tomatoes in supermarkets, due to which its prices will increase.
According to research by insurance company CIA Landlord, five crops are most affected by climate change, of which tomato is also one. In addition to tomatoes, the crops of almonds, coffee, hazelnuts and soybeans are most affected by climate change.
The forest cover in Italy has also decreased in recent years because in Italy cows are reared for leather and pasture is necessary for the cow. Forests are cut for these pastures.
Due to deforestation, the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air is disturbed. Polluted air not only aggravates respiratory problems, but it also causes shortness of breath in a healthy person.
Scientists say that by the year 2040, humans have time to change this cycle of climate change because after that nothing will be in our hands.
California accounts for 80 percent of the world’s almond exports and has a turnover of $6 billion.
However, the process of growing almonds is lengthy and requires a great deal of energy, both physical and human.
California only uses 60 percent of its beehives for almond pollination each winter, and the cost of transporting the bees and keeping them in cold storage means that almond production has higher carbon emissions.
Almonds require the most water among all dry fruits. To make almond milk, just one seed requires 3.2 gallons of water to reach the required size.
Almond milk has grown in popularity. It is being taken as a dairy substitute. It has 63 per cent share in the plant based milk market.
However, droughts across California have forced farmers to abandon their orchards because it’s hard to get enough water to sustain them.
Drought also means farmers have to spray various pesticides on almonds, some of which are deadly to bees and bees are already an endangered species.
Due to these, there may be a decline in the number of greenery and flowers in California. Only bees can pollinate and for this reason it is affecting them too.
Same is the case with soybeans. The weather in Brazil is getting hotter and drier but soybeans grow best in warm and humid climates. Farmers have to decide how they grow this crop now.
By using different pesticides and forcing the plants to become more tolerant of different climates, farmers have been able to effectively increase the amount of soybean production.
However, this is not a sustainable measure as the climate will thus continue to worsen. For this reason, it has been estimated that by the year 2050, soybean production will decrease by 86-92 percent.
Soybean plants also require a lot of space and for this deforestation has been done all over Brazil. This is most likely to have happened in the Amazon rainforest, where massive fires were lit to make room for crops. Scientists have warned for this reason that these forests now emit more carbon dioxide than they absorb.
This is a global problem, scientists warn, because we depend on the Amazon forests to provide six percent of the world’s oxygen supply and keep carbon out of the atmosphere. If we continue to destroy this place, the air quality of our planet will decrease and global warming will intensify.
This will be manifested in the form of rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, a worldwide decline in biodiversity and agriculture.
According to research by the CIA landlord, coffee production in Brazil is projected to drop by 76 percent over the next few years as the country is getting drier.
Coffee plants grow best in moist, tropical climates with soils and temperatures reaching around 21 °C.
Climate change is causing the Brazilian air to become drier, leading to a decline in coffee bean production. Italy, on the other hand, is hoping to soon produce the country’s favorite bean due to its rising temperatures.
