New Delhi: Lok Sabha elections are going on in the country. Amidst all this, Congress is continuously attacking BJP that they want to change the Constitution and end reservation from the country. Whereas, on the other hand, BJP is targeting Congress and saying that Congress is giving the benefits of reservation to Muslims by including them in the OBC quota. However, many people on social media have accused Congress of creating obstacles in the way of reservation.
Chidambaram told when Congress implemented reservation
Amidst all this, Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram posted on social media platform The first amendment to the Constitution was passed. This was followed by the PV Narasimha Rao-led Congress government, which implemented 27 percent reservation for OBCs in central government jobs in 1994. At the same time, it was the Congress government led by Dr. Manmohan Singh, which implemented 27 percent reservation for OBCs in central government educational institutions in 2006.
Many people reacted to Chidambaram’s X post
He further wrote, ‘Till now, all the governments that came after that at the Center have followed the Congress’s policy on reservation. The limit of 50 percent reservation was a judicial decision. It has been violated in many states. Congress has promised in its manifesto 2024 that Congress or a Congress-led government will remove the 50 percent limit for reservation. Now along with political reaction, people’s reactions have also started coming. People are reacting to P. Chidambaram’s post saying that it was Nehru who had written letters to Chief Ministers clearly opposing reservation for SCs and STs.
‘Kelkar committee’s recommendation was kept in abeyance’
People on social media said that Nehru had written in his letter, ‘It is true that we are bound by certain rules and traditions regarding helping the Scheduled Castes and Tribes. They deserve help, but, nevertheless, I dislike any kind of reservation, especially in service. I react strongly against this double standard which leads to inefficiency.’ People are further writing that it was the Congress itself, which kept the Kelkar Committee’s recommendation (for the Backward Commission) made in 1957 on the back burner until PM Modi approved the OBC Commission in 2018 despite opposition from the Congress. Was not given constitutional status.
‘Rajiv Gandhi had strongly opposed OBC reservation’
People also said that it was the Congress which did not implement the recommendations of the Mandal Commission made in 1983. Ultimately the BJP-backed government implemented it in 1990. It was Rajiv Gandhi who strongly opposed OBC reservation in 1990. Along with this, people wrote, ‘It is Congress itself, which condemned Dr. Ambedkar and made every possible effort to defeat him and prevent his entry into Parliament. It is the Congress which humiliated a backward leader like Sitaram Kesari at the hands of the Gandhi family. It is Rahul Gandhi who abused the entire backward community in his 2019 speech and for which he was also held guilty by the court.
‘Congress’s history is full of creating hurdles in reservation’
He wrote, ‘It is the Congress which tried to cheat the OBCs in Andhra Pradesh between 2004-10 by giving some share of their reservation to the Muslims. The Congress government at the Center itself had tried to cheat the OBCs by giving a part of their quota to Muslims in 2011. It is the Congress which has named the entire Muslim community in Karnataka as OBC, thereby depriving the OBCs of their full share. Through all this, people are saying that the history of Congress is full of creating obstacles in the quota for SC, ST and OBC. (IANS)
