symbolic picture
Congress has made Jai Narayan Patnaik its candidate from Puri Lok Sabha seat of Odisha. On Saturday morning itself, Sucharita Mohanty had returned the ticket to Congress saying that she did not have the money to contest the elections. Issuing an official statement, the Congress said that party president Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Jai Narayan Patnaik (in place of Sucharita Mohanty) as the party candidate from Puri parliamentary constituency for the Lok Sabha elections.
This was the reason given for not contesting elections
Earlier, Congress candidate Sucharita Mohanty had refused to contest the elections citing lack of money. He said on Saturday that only lack of funds is stopping us from campaigning victoriously in Puri. I regret that it would not be possible to campaign in Puri without party funding. Therefore, I return the Congress ticket for Puri parliamentary constituency. Journalist-turned-politician Sucharita alleged that Odisha Congress in-charge Ajoy Kumar asked her to contest elections using his funds.
No success in raising funds
Sucharita Mohanty said that I was a salaried professional journalist. Entered electoral politics 10 years ago. I have given my all in my campaign in Puri. I have tried to raise funds to support my campaign for progressive politics but have not had much success so far. Mohanty had also attempted to arrange funds through crowd-funding.
Called himself a loyal Congress worker
He had shared a UPI QR code and other account details on his social media account while seeking donations to contest the elections. She said she is a loyal Congress worker but had to take this drastic step as she was unable to raise enough money on her own and the party was not giving her anything.
