Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala Congress has nominated JB Mather from the minority community as its Rajya Sabha member from the state.
Mather’s nomination took place when the name could not be agreed upon despite several rounds of talks and finally a list of three names was sent to the party high command who chose him.
With her nomination, the Congress has decided to send a woman to the Upper House for the first time in 40 years.
Presently, Mather is an AICC member and also the state president of Mahila Congress in Kerala. His grandfather T.O.Bawa was the former state president of the party, while his father was a former treasurer of the state party unit.
Incidentally, the Muslim population in Kerala is 3.30 crore, 26 per cent of the state’s population. It is second on the list after the Hindu population (54 per cent), while the Christian community has an 18 per cent share.
In Kerala, the major Indian Union Muslim League is the second largest ally of the Congress-led opposition, while the ruling CPI(M)-led Left consists of the Indian National League and the National Secular Conference, with one legislator each and three Muslim legislators who have supported the Left. Won as an independent candidate.
A media critic on condition of anonymity said it has now become a practice that the Left is also fielding Muslim candidates.
One critic said, “Election means votes and the strategy is to get it, because today no political front can take things lightly and hence it is politics of appeasement. It is a win-win situation for all.” “
