Morena/New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued his sharp attack on Congress amid the controversy related to ‘Inheritance Tax’. PM Modi on Thursday alleged that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had abolished inheritance tax to save his mother Indira Gandhi’s property from going to the government after her death. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh hit back at Prime Minister Modi and said that he has once again lied as Indira Gandhi had donated her ancestral property in Allahabad to ‘Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund’ in 1970 itself.
‘Congress will snatch more than half of the property left by ancestors’
Addressing an election rally in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, PM Modi said that he is standing as a wall between the people and the Congress’s plans to loot them. He claimed that after taking advantage of it by removing inheritance tax, Congress now wants to impose it again on the people of the country. Modi alleged that if Congress comes to power, it will take away more than half of the property left by people’s ancestors through ‘inheritance tax’.
‘The then PM Rajiv Gandhi abolished inheritance tax’
PM Modi said, ‘Listen with open ears to the sins that Congress has committed. I want to bring forward an interesting fact. When sister Indira Gandhi died, there was a law under which half of the property went to the government. At that time there were discussions that Indiraji had bequeathed her property to her son Rajiv Gandhi. To save money going to the government, the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi abolished inheritance tax.
PM Modi took a dig at Congress leader Sam Pitroda’s statement
PM Modi, taking a dig at Congress leader Sam Pitroda’s statement amid the controversy over the issue of distribution of property, said that an advisor to the ‘prince’ of the opposition party has now suggested imposing inheritance tax. The Prime Minister said that as long as BJP is there, it will not allow such plans to succeed. He said, ‘The wealth you have accumulated after enduring hard work and hardships will be looted from you if the Congress-led government is formed. Modi is standing as a wall between you and Congress’s plan to loot you.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has termed PM Modi’s statement as a lie.
Jairam Ramesh hit back at PM Modi’s statement
Jairam Ramesh hit back and posted on ‘X’, ‘Yesterday the Prime Minister had claimed that Congress wants to impose inheritance tax. Once it became clear that it was actually the BJP that had been promoting the inheritance tax, they changed course. Once again his lies were exposed. Sharing a part of the budget speech of VP Singh, who was the finance minister in the Rajiv Gandhi government, he said, ‘Here is a paragraph from the budget speech of the then finance minister VP Singh of March 16, 1985, in which he proposed to abolish inheritance tax. I went.’
These issues are in discussion among the people during Lok Sabha elections
Ramesh said, ‘Incidentally, Indira Gandhi had given her ancestral property in Allahabad to the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in 1970 itself. Every time the Prime Minister opens his mouth to speak, he presents fresh evidence of his determination to lie. Let us tell you that the issues related to ‘division of property’ and ‘inheritance tax’ have received a lot of discussion among the people during the Lok Sabha elections and there are continuous statements on this from the party and the opposition.
