Congress dissidents or the ‘G-23’ group, demanding a comprehensive change in the functioning of the party, held a meeting at the residence of senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and took a dig at the party leadership, especially the Gandhi family, while savoring Kashmiri food. The group issued a statement after the meeting, which read: “We believe that the only way forward for the Congress is to adopt a model of collective and inclusive leadership and decision-making at all levels .. to oppose the BJP.” And this is necessary to strengthen the Congress party. We demand that the Congress party initiate dialogue with like-minded forces to create a platform to pave the way for a credible alternative in 2024.”
Apart from the initial members in the group, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Patiala MP and former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh’s wife Preneet Kaur, senior leader P.J. Some other leaders including Kurien, former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Raj Babbar and Kuldeep Sharma also attended the meeting.
Shankarsinh Vaghela and Sandeep Dixit also participated in the meeting.
Vaghela has been in Congress before, but his current position is not clear.
The meeting was held after the CWC backed Sonia Gandhi’s leadership to chalk out the strategy ahead. The group has already reached out to like-minded leaders within Congress.
The Congress President on Tuesday removed the state presidents of five states and after this supporters started targeting the dissidents.
However, one of the members, Vivek Tankha, rejected the word ‘rebellion’, saying, “There is no rebellion.” He left the meeting early.
Speaking to -AnyTV News, Sandeep Dikshit said, “The Congress president should have accessibility, acceptability and accountability.”
