UK Parliament.
London:Ahead of the general election in Britain in July, a controversy has erupted over a black female MP. Let us tell you that a controversy erupted within the opposition Labor Party on Wednesday when conflicting reports emerged about the electoral prospects of the country’s first black female MP after an internal disciplinary process. Diane Abbott, who was first elected as MP in 1987 for Hackney North and Stoke Newington in East London, claimed that she has been barred from contesting the seat again as a Labor candidate.
The development comes after her suspension was revoked this week following an investigation into her controversial comments about racism faced by different communities. Abbott (70) said in a post on ‘X’, “Thank you to all those who supported me. I will campaign for the victory of the Labor Party. But I am very disappointed that many reports suggest that I will not be nominated.” Amid anger from her supporters within the party, journalists asked Labor leader Keir Starmer if the 70-year-old MP has been banned as a party candidate in the July 4 general election. Starmer told reporters, “No, that’s not true. No decision has been taken to ban Diane Abbott.”
PM Rishi Sunak raised questions on the opposition
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also joined the controversy and said the opposition should address the issues related to Abbott. The Labor Party launched an investigation in April last year after Abbott wrote in the ‘Observer’ newspaper that Irish, Jews and visiting people in Britain “undoubtedly face prejudice” which is “tantamount to racism”. Abbott apologized after the controversy and withdrew his comments soon after they were published. (Language)
