Washington. According to US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci, the COVID-19 epidemic is not over yet and soon a new variant of Omicron may cause havoc here. According to CNBC, Fauci said that about 25 or 30 percent of new infections in the US are due to the ba.2 subvariant and may soon be the main cause of infection.
Fauci said he expects an increase in cases, but it doesn’t necessarily lead to a massive jump in cases, like the other variants.
The ba.2 subvariant is about 50 to 60 percent more contagious than Omicron, but it doesn’t appear to be more serious, says Fauci, chief medical adviser to the White House, the US presidential office.
“When you look at the cases of infection, they don’t look more serious and they don’t seem to escape the immunity created by vaccines or prior infections,” he said.
This variant has already increased the number of infections in many parts of Europe, including China and the UK. Health officials have been emphasizing that coronavirus vaccines and booster doses are the best way to prevent a person from becoming more ill due to infection.
Other US health experts are also warning about the highly infectious Ba.2 variant.
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy told Fox News that the new variant could accelerate new cases of corona infection, but the US is more prepared to deal with it well than it was two years ago.
He said that we have to be ready. Corona is not gone. Our focus should be on preparedness and not on panic.
Scott Gottlieb, a board member of pharmaceutical company Fire and former FDA chief, also says that the new variant will accelerate infections but does not anticipate a new wave.
Meanwhile, according to the data released by the American Center for Disease Control, more than 31,200 new cases of infection were reported on Saturday and 958 people lost their lives due to corona infection.
