Deshmukh denied the allegations but had to step down from his post. The CBI has registered an FIR after preliminary investigation.
Sachin Waje’s petition dismissed
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday said it wants to dismiss a plea by sacked policeman Sachin Waje challenging two orders of a panel set up to probe allegations of corruption against former Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh. Waje, who has been in jail since his arrest in the murder of businessman Mansukh Hiren and in the Antilia bomb case, in his plea challenged the validity and propriety of two orders passed by the Chandiwal Commission and sought quashing. The panel’s first order rejected Waaze’s application to call joint commissioner of police (crime) Milind Bharambe for investigation. Whereas in the second order, the commission refused to allow him to withdraw his earlier statement against Deshmukh.
A division bench of Justice Gautam Patel and Justice Madhav Jamdar, however, said it did not wish to grant any relief and said it would dismiss the petition. Waje’s lawyer Anil Antoorkar then demanded that the matter be adjourned for Wednesday so that he can take directions from Waje on whether he would like to withdraw the petition. To this, the court said, you either withdraw the petition or we may reject it strictly.
Waje had filed an application before the Chandiwal Commission on January 21 this year seeking summoning of the then Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bharambe before the commission. Bharambe had written a letter and later a report on 25 March 2021. A copy of this secret letter along with Bharambe’s report was presented to the commission by former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on 30 March 2021. Waje had sought the summoning of Bharambe before the commission, claiming that his report was prejudicial to his interest. However, the commission rejected his application on January 24. On 9 February, Waje had submitted an application seeking withdrawal of his statement regarding Deshmukh.
