New Delhi. In view of the violent protests by students in the neighboring country Bangladesh, the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post on Monday. India is keeping an eye on the matter. Foreign affairs expert Dr. Sandeep Tripathi expressed his views on this issue.
Dr. Sandeep Tripathi said, “Generally South Asia remains peaceful, but what happened in Bangladesh is the opposite of this. The manner in which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country and the pictures of the protesters that came out after that are disturbing. It is being said that this is a protest of students, but the pictures of the protesters are pointing towards a well-planned conspiracy.”
Regarding Bangladesh’s relations with India, Dr. Sandeep Tripathi said, “Bangladesh was on the path of economic development for 15 years. We had good relations with this neighboring country. Recently, there was talk of Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the two countries. Bangladesh was keen that we should talk about a free trade agreement. The trade process was moving forward between the two countries. Talks were going on regarding investment.”
He said, “Bangladesh is a very important neighbouring country and we have played a very important role in its creation, but countries like Pakistan and China want that Bangladesh should not have good relations with India. India’s relations with Bangladesh have been very good for the last 15 years under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. Due to this, we were confident about the border of the five states adjoining Bangladesh and positive talks were taking place on problems like illegal infiltration.”
He said, “The Bangladesh incident is a very important incident from the security point of view of India. The most important thing is that Bangladesh is India’s biggest trade partner in South Asia. India is also the second biggest trading partner for Bangladesh.”
