Drinking alcohol is not considered good. In many western countries, doing this work within the boundaries is not considered bad. It has its own etiquette. But it is believed that consumption of alcohol is not good for health. But a unique research has suggested that if couples drink alcohol together, they can probably live a longer life. The aim of this study was to look at the effect of alcohol consumption on mortality in couples.
In this unique study, scientists examined data from more than 4,500 married or cohabiting couples, who were interviewed every two years over the course of two decades. They found that couples lived longer if both drank alcohol.
Dr. Kira Burditt, a research professor at the University of Michigan, said a theory called ‘drinking partnership’ has been suggested. According to this, couples with similar patterns of alcohol consumption have better marriages. This was the inspiration behind the study. He said, ‘The purpose of this study was to look at the effect of alcohol consumption and mortality on couples.

Interestingly, couples who both drank alcohol together in the last three months lived longer than couples who either did not drink alcohol, or had a moderate drinking pattern. Was inconsistent, or in which one drank alcohol and the other did not.
The researchers said that when two people have similar drinking behavior, it may be a reflection of compatibility between the partners in their lifestyle, intimacy and relationship satisfaction.Dr. Birditt said he has also found in other studies that couples who drink alcohol together have better relationship quality, and this may be because it increases intimacy.
While the findings might seem like a recommendation to drink more alcohol with your spouse, Dr. Burditt cautioned against that interpretation. The results also showed that light drinking, compared to heavy drinking, was associated with greater conflict between individuals and their partners.

Dr. Burditt said further research should focus on couples who both drink alcohol – looking at their daily lives, whether they drink together and what they are doing when they are drinking. This may help explain the relationship between longevity and drinking patterns. The study, published in The Gerontologist Journal, also shows that survival varies as a function of one’s own and one’s partner’s drinking.
