The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has asked its employees to come wearing unironed clothes every Monday. CSIR has also given the reason behind this. In fact, CSIR has recently started a campaign named ‘Wrinkles are good’, in which its labs and employees across the country have been asked to wear unironed clothes every Monday till May 15.
This is the logic behind it
Explaining the rationale behind this, CSIR said that this step is being taken amidst efforts to increase awareness about energy conservation and environmental sustainability in the scientific community and its aim is to reduce the daily carbon emissions. . Through this campaign, an effort is being made to make the world aware of the carbon emissions caused by traditional ironing. For this, CSIR also issued a circular on 3 May. According to this, ironing clothes can produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to climate change.
‘200 grams of CO2 is produced’
Talking about this, Dr. N Kalaiselvi, Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the first woman director of CSIR, said, “Ironing each set of clothes produces 200 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2). In such a situation, if we Wearing clothes without ironing can prevent the emission of up to 200 grams of carbon dioxide.”
The circular further said, “We have to take it as a challenge to wear unironed clothes at least once a week, which clearly means not ironing the clothes and at the same time embracing the wrinkles. Reduce energy costs and show collective commitment towards the environment.
