Curfew was imposed in Odisha’s Balasore after clashes between two groups. The district administration also suspended internet services in some sensitive areas of the city and appealed to people not to come out of their homes. Police said the curfew was imposed from midnight of June 17 to midnight of June 18. Officials said Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke to Balasore District Collector Ashish Thackeray on Monday and directed him to take immediate steps to control the situation.
30 people were arrested
A group of people sat on a dharna on Monday in the city’s Bhujakhiya Peer area to protest the blood spilling on the road due to cattle sacrifice. The clashes started after another group allegedly pelted stones at them, police said. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar is camping in Balasore. Police conducted a flag march in Balasore. Police said about 30 people have been arrested so far.
Appeal not to leave homes
According to the police, all the entry points of OT Road have been closed. Police said that no one will come out of their homes, neither will they be allowed to go on foot nor by vehicle. People are not allowed to go out except for emergency medical help. Balasore Superintendent of Police Sagarika Nath said that curfew has been imposed in Balasore Municipality area. All business establishments and shops will remain closed. A senior police officer said that adequate police arrangements have been made in sensitive areas and the situation is coming under control. However, there were reports of sporadic violence at some places on Monday. (Language)
