Kolkata. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Remal is going to hit the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast on Sunday midnight. Therefore, the authorities of Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport have decided to stop all flights for 21 hours from Sunday afternoon. The low pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has turned into a severe cyclonic storm Remal. This cyclone is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds in Kolkata. The city of Kolkata will likely receive up to 200 mm of rain and winds can blow at a speed of up to 100 km/h within the first 24 hours of landfall.
According to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, flight operations will be halted from 12 noon on May 26 to 9 am on May 27. The suspension of flights will result in the cancellation of 394 flights, of which 28 are international flights. This will ultimately affect a total of 63,000 passengers. During weather-related disruptions, airlines often allow passengers to rebook flights without any money or get a refund. However, under the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), passengers have specific rights in case of flight delays and cancellations.
In case of flight cancellation
In case of flight cancellation, airlines are required to provide passengers with an alternate flight or compensation as well as a full refund of the air ticket, as ordered by the ministry. Apart from this, airlines are required to arrange food and refreshments for passengers who have checked in for their original flight at the airport and are waiting for an alternate flight.

These include food and refreshments, the option of an alternate flight or a full refund of the ticket. If the delay exceeds a certain period of time, the airline may also be required to arrange for accommodation by sending the affected passengers to a hotel.
