Ramal wreaks havoc in Bangladesh.
Dhaka: At least seven people were killed and lakhs were left without power as cyclone Remal hit Bangladesh coastal areas. Remal brought strong winds of up to 120 kilometre (km) per hour and flooded hundreds of villages as it hit the coast. The weather department said Remal weakened slightly on Monday morning with wind speeds of 80 to 90 kmph. The cyclone hit the coast on Sunday midnight.
The department said that at 5:30 am, the cyclonic storm located 150 km northeast of Sagar Island caused torrential rains. However, while moving in the northeast direction, ‘Remal’ started weakening. ‘Remal’ is the first cyclonic storm formed in the Bay of Bengal before this year’s monsoon season. The monsoon season lasts from June to September. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a system for naming cyclones in the Indian Ocean region, Oman has named the cyclone ‘Remal’ (sand in Arabic). The cyclonic storm was accompanied by strong winds and heavy rains, the effect of which was seen in Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Satkhira and Chattogram, among other areas.
