New Delhi. The dates for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana are likely to be announced today. The Election Commission will announce these dates in a press conference on Friday, August 16 at 3 pm. This announcement is considered especially important for Jammu and Kashmir as assembly elections will be held here for the first time after the removal of Article 370. Elections in Jammu and Kashmir may be held in 5 to 7 phases, for which a thorough review of the security arrangements has been done. In view of the security situation, the Election Commission has given the green signal and preparations for the elections have started.

The term of the assembly in Haryana is ending on November 3, so there is a need to hold elections there soon. The Election Commission recently visited Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir and took stock of the security situation. The Supreme Court has ordered elections in Jammu and Kashmir before September 30, due to which the election dates here can be announced soon.
Election dates can also be announced in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. The term of Maharashtra Assembly is ending in November, while the term of Jharkhand Assembly is ending in the first week of January 2025. Elections were last held in Haryana, Maharashtra and Jharkhand in 2019. The last elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014 and elections have not been held here since the removal of Article 370. After delimitation, the number of assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir has increased to 90, out of which 43 seats are in Jammu and 47 seats in Kashmir. The election dates will be announced after 3 pm today, after which it will be clear when voting will take place in these states.
