Violence in Bangladesh

Dhaka: The death toll in anti-government protests in Bangladesh rose to 440 on Tuesday. According to local media reports, more than 100 people have died in the incidents of violence that broke out after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister on Monday and left the country. The army is trying to control the situation in the violence-hit country. ‘BDNews24.com’ news portal said that despite the rising death toll, there were signs of the situation returning to normal on Tuesday, with police and army patrolling the streets. The portal said that after Monday’s unrest and tense situation overnight, the situation in Dhaka was calm on Tuesday morning. According to the report, buses and other public vehicles were seen on the roads and local shopkeepers also opened their shops.

24 people died by burning alive

At least 24 people, including an Indonesian national, were burnt alive in a hotel by a mob in Bangladesh. The incident took place when Sheikh Hasina left the country after resigning from the post of Prime Minister. Local journalists and hospital sources gave this information on Tuesday. Late on Monday night, a mob set fire to the Jabir International Hotel owned by District Awami League General Secretary Shaheen Chakkalder in Johor district, burning 24 people alive. Most of the people who died in this incident were people staying in the hotel.

Fierce violence

“An Indonesian national was among the dead,” a local Dhaka journalist told PTI over phone. He said doctors at the Johor General Hospital confirmed that they had counted 24 bodies while surviving hotel staff feared there could be more bodies in the rubble. According to media reports, a violent mob protesting against the Awami League government set the hotel’s ground floor on fire and it soon spread to the upper floors. Similar reports came from across Bangladesh where angry mobs vandalised residences and business establishments of several Awami League leaders and workers.
